Continuing with our series of live sessions in our Instagram profile, next Friday, May 29th, at 4 pm (EDT), Thiago Gomide, our Director, will talk with curator, critic and scholar Paulo Ven\u00e2ncio Filho about the great tropical expressionist artist Oswaldo Goeldi (1895-1961).<\/p>\n

We also invite you to watch the video prepared for the artist\u2019s exhibition at Galeria 32, an annex to the Brazilian Embassy in London, where our guest talks about the importance of Goeldi\u2019s body of work. The exhibition celebrated the artist in the year that marks the 50th anniversary of his death, 2011, and was the first international exhibition in over 80 years \u2013 the last one was held in 1930, in Bern, Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Averse to the\u00a0carioca<\/em>\u00a0cultural scene, Oswaldo Goeldi finds inspiration in the bohemian and anonymous figures of the streets of Rio. For a voluntarily exiled artist, art was not related to any kind of idealization of the world but rather discovered in the most distant places, within the excluded, those who are on the margins of modern transformations.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
His body of work is a constant exercise of lucidity: it is through the artistic discipline that Goeldi approaches the world\u2019s strangeness. The backgrounds density is constantly interrupted by sharp lines that mold the figures, hence exposing reality\u2019s weight. His work impresses by the depth and breadth of the questions he points to. Men roaming through the surfaces of urban landscapes, fishermen working on extreme conditions, unknown characters who can\u2019t seem to hide a feeling of mystery or loneliness. Isolation \u2013 a recurrent topic nowadays \u2013 has always been present in Goeldi\u2019s research; however, it does not have a romantic escapist bias, it does not place art on a mystical-transcendent plane; on the contrary, it conceives it as a mundane, practical way of doing things, a permanent exercise of criticism and chronicle of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Paulo Ven\u00e2ncio Filho, our guest, is an art critic, curator and professor at the Fine Arts Department at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and researcher. Ven\u00e2ncio Filho has published essaies about a range of Brazilian artists such as H\u00e9lio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, Lygia Pape, Mira Schendel, Anna Maria Maiolino and Eleonore Koch. As a curator he is responsible for \u201cO Ateli\u00ea de Oswaldo Goeldi\u201d at MAM-SP in 2012, \u201cCentury City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis\u201d at Tate Modern (2001), \u201cIber\u00ea Camargo: Diante da Pintura (Pinacoteca do Estado de S\u00e3o Paulo,2003)\u201d, \u201cPossibilities of the Object: Experiments in Brazilian Modern and Contenporary Art\u201d (The Fruitmarket Gallery, Glasgow, 2015) and \u201cPiero Manzoni\u201d (MAM-SP, 2015).<\/p>\n
