Hello,

We hope this e-mail finds you well.

Continuing with our series of live sessions in our Instagram profile, next Friday, May 26th, at 6 pm (BRT) [5 pm (EST)], Thiago Gomide, our Director, will talk with Eric Shiner, who was the director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, for a conversation about one of the most iconic artists from the post-war era, Andy Warhol (1928-1987).

The importance of Andy Warhol’s  body of work to contemporary art and pop culture, having the artist created in a multitude of supports and medias, is undeniable; however, at the core of his production, lies photography. As Warhol himself reported in his journal: “I didn’t believe in art; I believed in photography.”

Throughout the 1970s, Andy Warhol brought his camera with him everywhere he went to document his life and interests. First using a Polaroid and then a 35-millimeter compact Minox, he created a photographic language and unique visual vocabulary. In his photographs are depicted icons of the effervescent culture of the time, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones, Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Steven Spielberg, Tina Turner, among others.

Photography is at the center of Warhol’s visual language, through which he explored imagery. In fact, his visual language remains one of the most central and long-lasting aspects of his creative process, covering also various photographic genres, and can even be associated with influencing the current portrait aesthetics, such as Instagram selfies.

Eric Shiner is Executive Director of Pioneer Works in New York. From 2011 to 2016, he was the Director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, after serving as the Milton Fine Curator of Art at the museum beginning in 2008. He was most recently the Artistic Director at White Cube Gallery in New York. Prior to that he served as the Senior Vice President of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s. Throughout these experiences, he has demonstrated his commitment to lead in ways that promote diversity, inclusion and social justice. Shiner was an assistant curator of the Yokohama Triennale 2001, Japan’s first-ever, large-scale exhibition of international contemporary art, he is also the author of books such as The Night Is Still Young that captures and contextualizes drag culture in Japan at the turn of the century, from photographs by the Japanese artist Tomoaki Hata.
